Menton, Garavan, France
Historic property in botanic gardens
A magnificent “demeure” extended and created by Ferdinand Bac in 1919. Ferdinand Bac was the grandson of Jerome Napoleon and in his own right an artist and caricaturist of the highest calibre. Here at the Colombieres Ferdinand Bac created a masterpiece not only from the villa but also the gardens. The world famous garden “of happenings” reflects journeys of odyssey, full of wonderful landscape architecture; fountains, pools, frescoes, statues, bridges, a mausoleum an olive grove and a dove cote.
Famous visitors such as General de Gaulle have graced this most magnificent property as have the elite of the Cote d’Azur. After the war the property was converted into a guest house and tea room, until it was classed as a monument historic in 1990 and sold to the present owners in 1995, who with the help of the French Ministry of Culture have restored the gardens and the villa.
